Beyond the Label: Navigating Identity with a Mental Diagnosis

Seeking help and understanding one's mental health can be a daunting process, but it's an important step towards healing and self-awareness.

In a world where depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, C-PTSD, and more are become increasing popular, it is important to remind ourselves that it is only a part of us and not our whole identity.

Mental disorders are not diseases, they are a collection of symptoms that are parts of us trapped in old memories.

The first step to reclaiming our true self is to change the way we talk about our feelings:-

❌ I feel so angry

✅ A part of me feels angry

A part of me feels…

Sad ☹️

Angry 😡

〰️

Fearful 🫣

Guilty 🧑‍⚖️

Hurt 💔

Shame 😔

Often when we face hardships and overwhelming circumstances, we find ways to forge ahead or “soldier on.” We create coping mechanism which manifest in a variety of ways such as anxiety, anger, depression, career issues, relationship issues and unhealthy patterns of behavior we struggle to change no matter how many times we try.

This happens because when we experience trauma, the survivor, “soldier on” part of us disassociates with our pain, our body, and the part of ourselves that needs healing.

When this happens, we experience disharmony in our lives without truly addressing the root cause.

What causes us to create these parts?

Try this journaling prompt to uncover what a part of you is making you think, feel and behave.

Practice self care and resilience

Breathe-in for a count of 7 and breathe-out for a count of 11.

The most important thing to remember is that your out-breath needs to be longer than your in-breath. So you could even try 5-7, breathe-in for 5 counts and breathe-out for 7 counts.
When we experience a trigger, our bodies go into fight or flight where we can’t think clearly, we start having a racing breath, and we are overcome by emotions. This happens because our sympathetic nervous system is activated. In order to stay grounded, we must enable our parasympathetic nervous system that is responsible for calming us down. This can be done with a longer out-breath.

Reclaiming your authentic self

It is possible to reclaim our true self despite our diagnosis. But in order to do that we must address the root cause behind our symptoms/parts of us that need healing.

It is absolutely possible to see true transformation within and become confident, self assured, and see your life increasingly become happier, loving and so enjoyable! You don’t have to go through this alone.

Together we can address the pent up feelings like depression and anxiety that result in behaviors that aren’t serving you today.
